DealMoms new direction

I've hardly had time to run two blogs lately, as well as an Etsy store for my @Home Ninja site, so I've decided to change direction on DealMoms. I'll likely still post bargains as they come up to let everyone know of great deals but I will include more home made items. I'm finding that more and more moms, like myself, are finding other ways to save money by making their own every day items. Whether it be homemade wool dryer balls, crochet swiffer pad, felted hats or repurposed sweater kittens. Generally it's a longer used item, cheaper and friendlier to the environment too.

We mom's need to stick together. What better way than to spread the news of other moms hard at work to make things easier for the rest of us. :) On the right of the page you'll find a link for Binding Threads Embroidery, she's a friend of mine and not only does she have some fantastic items on Etsy (which I will feature here soon) but she will also take any drawing you or your child has made and embroider it by hand for use on a pillow or frame it for your wall to keep forever. Check out the link!

I think that's it for now. I'm really excited to start this new page and hope to have more folks watch and follow us as we grow. As usual I have left a few links on the right for Newegg and Musicians Friend, among other things. I've purchased from nearly all of them and I wouldn't put the link up if I didn't trust them. These phones will come with not only a start of between 60 and 400 minutes but sometimes they'll throw in a 1 Year Service card and maybe even a Double Minutes card. Radio Reddit is a great website that allows musicians to upload their own work (not cover songs) for "radio" play. The site has a schedule that you can keep up with what genre of songs play at what time. They have a chat room you can join via IRC and talk to the guys about your songs, their songs or just chat. You can use the online player or with one click you can open with Winamp, MediaPlayer or RealPlayer. PLUS a banner to put at the top of your own webpage to promote the site is also available.

How much, you ask? FREE. You know how I love free. ;) Join their site. Even if you are not a musician you'll certainly enjoy some of these songs. If you ARE a musician you get some radio play and exposure. :)

Baby Age, Amazon, Kaplan and me

Today, my darlings, I would like to have you all check out BabyAge.com Just as DealMoms isn't just about moms or just for moms, babyage isn't just about/for babies.

Recently I went to an unnamed online and Super chain that we all know. I'll not name names but it rhymes with stalltart. (Pause for sarcasm.) I wanted a gift for my nephews. I decided upon a Step2 Wagon and trailer. I tried having them sent to the store but it would take up to three weeks. That would be after his birthday and is not acceptable. So to ship to her house it came to roughly $140. After I ordered it my sister hounded me that it was too much. I was going to send her a link to a picture of both items (in the same picture) and found one on Amazon.com. I decided to check google then and see what the prices were on other sites. Turns out I paid WAY more than I could have. So hours after purchasing I went to cancel. The cancel button wasn't there though it should have been because it was processing not sent. After 4 days of constant contact with customer service they only canceled 1/2 the order and the rest had to be returned a week later. Before they canceled anything I was already looking on Amazon for the wagon/trailer.

BabyAge was able to get me the wagon within 3-5 days! Not only that but they saved me $20+ over what the other place charged! I like money. I like saving money. Win/Win! While they didn't send out a "this item has been shipped" email, it still got there within 3 days and in excellent condition!! I'm extremely pleased with them. I even received an email today stating they'd love feedback but also that if there was a problem to email reply to the customer service manager and gave me a full name, email addy and phone number to call. No one does that anymore. They give you a first name of someone in another country that copies and pastes answers from their program's help files. I'll be checking out babyage lots more and certainly recommend that you guys do too!

OH, they do have the wagon/trailer combo but are sold out at the moment so I got the trailer from Kaplan Early Learning Company which I also recommend (though the trailer was $5 bucks more than the other fellas). Lots of learning info for the kids and even a classroom floor planner. That's just cute. :p All in all on Amazon.com (big ad to your right) I spent $119 for the wagon, trailer, and a Blues Clues DVD. 3 items shipped from 3 vendors to two different locations and it still cost me LESS and arrived a week earlier than the other place promised. AND with no fighting with customer service over problems they never fixed anyway. Many KUDOS to Amazon, Kaplan and BabyAge! You guys helped me make my two nephews and two kids really really happy. :)

I read about this product from a newsletter I get from Mom Inventors. The Sock Ons are made from a soft woven blend of elastic material with contrasting color stitching around the edges. It's a stretchy, over-sock garment that prevents babies from pulling off their footwear by gently catching around baby's heel when pulled from the to toe!

Invented by mom, Kezi Levin, a graphic designer. She didn't know how to sew, so she made a prototype by cutting up a pair of her tights and gluing them together. Then she spent 3 years designing, prototyping and doing all the other work to get her product to market, funding the business herself and launching in 2007.

AVG and Spybot

AVG is a fantastic program! Original price is $39.99 but Newegg's terrific deal is only $17.99 with FREE SHIPPING! While this is a really great deal, and it is, you can also get a FREE version of AVG on their website. There are big differences in the free and paid versions but EVERYONE needs virus protection for their computers.

Being that I've been both the computer user and the geek that has to help users delete the viruses from their computers I can tell you what works and what doesn't.

When I've started from scratch on any new computer, AVG is the first thing I download. I've only ever used the free version but it's worked flawlessly. Ok, one exception. I purchased a game from BFG, our July game of the month, The Price is Right, and installed it. For some reason AVG thought it was a virus. Since I have the free version of AVG I have access to their forums but not to customer support. After checking their forums and many emails to the folks at Big Fish Games, it is NOT a viral program. AVG admits this but still sends up a warning. You can set up AVG to avoid checking certain folders while scanning, this is one of them.

One other program we've tried (though I do like AVG more for personal reasons) is AVAST.

The second program I can't do without is Spybot - Search and Destroy. I know it sounds much like a Dungeons and Dragons game but what it does is search through your computer for spyware files that are keeping tabs on your computer. It alerts you when you scan your computer and allows you to choose if the program is something you did, in fact, download or if it is something you did not. They also have a program that cleans up your registry but I URGE you to read all the directions and instructions on that one...check google, etc. Your registry is the guts of your computer. If you happen to delete something windows NEEDS it does a lot of damage.

Hugga-bébé from a mom-ventor

Kimberly Davis had not one but TWO very vivid dreams on how to make a genius product we all wished (at one point of another) someone had invented long ago. Hugga-bébé is a form fitting, Velcro adjustable, miracle that helps your baby sit up straighter in various seats. Mommy took Jr to the park to play in the swings but he's just so small that he slumps over and eventually mommy takes him out for fear he'll come sliding out if she doesn't. Not anymore. Mom-vented Hugga-bébé wraps around the baby making a padded and safe filler between baby (4 months old - toddler) and the exer-sauscer, swing or jumper.

Hugga-bébé is reasonably priced and I wish I'd had one for each of my children. We rolled towels and put them around our baby so he would not end up with his arm through the leg hole of the Johnny-Jump-Up. I'm constantly changing the look of my desktop. We all do it. My step-mother loves kitty cat backgrounds, my sons love Pokémon and Mario, my sister loves fractal art and I like anything that isn't overly cluttered and leaves room for my icons. About a year ago I stumbled onto Vladstudio.com. Personally I've tried making wallpapers (though mine were all from the ex-hit show Charmed) and people loved them but not enough to keep coming back. I took photos and images already taken and made them into something else. Vlad has taken his own drawings and art and created desktop magic.

Firefox : Better and Faster

Hey, look no pop ups! AND no Microsoft? I'm IN! Mozilla Firefox is currently up to 3.5 release!

Like Internet Explorer (nicknames including Internet ExploDer and IE), Firefox is an internet browser which allows you to surf web pages. Firefox give you so much more than IE ever could. Security is a main factor. I used IE for a while but with the growing internet came growing ads and links with viri and spyware built in. I got sick of the constant IE junk so I switched to the Opera browser. Opera is great, don't get me wrong. I could make my own backgrounds and had fun using it but it has some serious issues with Java and Flash. Some videos won't load, some games won't play, etc.

My fabulous hubby was using Mozilla. I thought it looked too much like old Netscape and was quite bland. Mozilla came out with Firebird, which ran into a legal battle over the name and became Firefox. I've used nothing but Firefox for YEARS now. I love it! If you have troubles with your browser you go to their forums, ie BugZilla. You want a background or pretty buttons, hit their ADD-ON section. Their tab browsing is the very best. You can run multiple tabs on different sites and not use up valuable memory running more than one program (yeah, IE does it now, but didn't use to and theirs still isn't as good IMHO --OH and multiple tabs are great for things like Hatchlings, so you know). Now-a-days there are so many features even I can hardly keep up. Their security can't be beat!

Mozilla Firefox is FREE. Dealmoms and dads love FREE. You can personalize and customize as you wish. You have security and help on their forums that you can't get with Microsoft (they have it, again, they just can't measure up). I've repaired computers running IE and those running Firefox and I can tell you now that I'd much rather repair the Firefox computers.

Add-ons I can't live without :
Ad Block Plus - ABP HIDES ADS! I realize most free sites (including this one) rely mostly on ads to fund their servers and employees. Clicking ads and purchasing from them help people like me and Facebook stay in business (well, not really me because I've yet to make any money LOL). For sites I trust I allow them to run ads. Which you can do with ABP. There are still sites out there that will try to put things on your computer you DO NOT want there but with ABP it's been cut down to almost none.
( Also get anti virus software. I know a couple free and trustworthy ones which I'll blog about later )

FireFTP - This is an FTP program that you can use in another Tab of Firefox and not have to open/download a whole other program. It's fast and works great. I love it!

Undo Closed Tabs Button - sometimes I close tabs and close the wrong dang one. I drop my head in shame. Now I just click my Undo CTB and there is the site I thought I'd lost forever. whew.

You want different Themes, try Personas or one that is too funny Pimpzilla. You know it's awesome when they say "It's overdone...It's tacky...It's pimp".

Also, just a note here, in tab browsing, all these links open in a new tab not a new window.

Affordable Health Care : Where is it?

Every so often I rant. This is less a posting of a deal and more asking if anyone knows of any.

Today I was reading CNN and came across a video. This man grew up here and worked in an insurance company for 35 years. THIRTY FIVE YEARS. His wife worked there for 10 years. Yet he is also one of the millions without health care.

"As an American citizen I know I have a right to an education. If I get in trouble with the law I have a right to have an attorney. Why don't I have a right to heath insurance? Affordable health insurance. There's something wrong with that picture."

That is simply the most intelligent argument I've heard in a long time. We've all thought it. No one has said it like this.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 46 million Americans, or 18 percent of the population under the age of 65, were without health insurance in 2007, their latest data available.

I can guarantee that number has gone up. I'm one of them. In 2000 I was not working and my husband wasn't making enough for us to have private insurance so we had to be on the TNCare plan. In 2005 when I had our second child, my husband worked in construction and was making a bundle. We were able to afford a fantastic medical plan and the entire birth was again, covered. Our kids health care was completely covered and they were checked out whenever ANYTHING was wrong.

In 2006 the job ended and we chose to move to the "home office". It was a huge pay cut but it was time to settle down. We were forced to pitch our medical insurance for a plan that covered much less but it was all we could afford. His teacher had returned to work after 2 weeks of absences. She had a serious strep infection. When well enough she returned to work. Our oldest son came home coughing one afternoon. For days he seemed better but his cough persisted. I assumed he was fine because he was out playing every afternoon and seemed ok. One afternoon, all of a sudden, he turned pale and said he wanted to lie down. He had a low grade fever. We'd not been there long so we hadn't been to a pediatrician yet. The next day he was vomiting and had diarrhea. This with the fever had me concerned but I wanted to wait a day to see if it was simply a bug. Nothing I gave him made it better.

The next day was Sunday, so I hoped things would be ok until Monday when I could get him in to see a physician. It wasn't. Sunday we went to the ER. They told me he must have a stomach virus and gave him fluids for dehydration and sent him home. The ER doc didn't even listen to his chest. By Tuesday the peds office couldn't fit him in, his fever was raging day and night, he and I had moved to the living room so as not to disturb my husband or youngest sons sleep and I watched him breathe. He seemed to be having trouble. Not much but it was noticeable. Wednesday I still couldn't get through to the peds office and I asked my son, then age 6, how he was feeling. Now, if you know my son, you know he was always one to say he was ok no matter what the circumstances. His reply was that he was not ok. I asked if he felt like he was having trouble breathing and he thought about it for a moment and nodded yes.

BOOM, I call my husband and say we're going to the ER. He says he's on his way home (mile and a half away) and we go to the ER again. This time a competent physician listens to his chest and says "I can send him for xrays but I can tell you now he has pneumonia in his left lung and there is no oxygen moving in there. I'm out of my league and we're going to send him to a hospital with pediatricians on staff." We spent one week in a hospital trying everything under the sun. I didn't care what it was going to cost us. My baby was sick. (We later learned EVERYTHING at this hospital, including the pediatricians who came from local offices was, in fact, completely covered.)

After a week fluid began building around his lung. We were sent to a Childrens Hospital which specialized in these emergencies. He had a TEAM of doctors in his room within 15 minutes of his arrival. He had to be transferred by ambulance because he was on oxygen and needed medical supervision. I mention this because the ambulance service was NOT covered by our insurance plan (little did we know) because it was not deemed an emergency. $500.

This fantastic team of doctors knew right away they'd have to do surgery but had to wait for an available slot. After a few hours I sent my hubby home to be with the baby because there was no sense in us both being there until we knew when it was going to happen. Around 10:30pm the doctors came in and said they agreed waiting wasn't an option anymore, they wanted him in NOW so they used a NICU room as a sterile environment and went to work on him at 11pm. I woke my husband and let him know but told him to stay there and I'd call him when it was done. Our youngest needed him there. The surgery went well and he was moved to another room. A couple of days go by and the fluid stops draining, fever is still there, fluid is too. They decide on another surgery. This time they make 3 incisions and use a tiny camera to make certain it's all clear. Within a couple of days my baby is back to normal.

They did a strep test before we left and his levels were insane. What should have been 10-15 was over 1000. This hospital was absolutely wonderful. They worked fast, they fixed my baby. I can't thank them enough. Truly. If I win the lottery, they get a new wing. But insurance, for whatever reasons, decided most of the life saving things were not necessary and were either not covered or not covered enough. They did pay a huge chunk, about $23,000. We still owe quite a bit.

Since then, nearly 3 years ago, we've left 3 jobs (lay offs or moves) and moved 3 times. We don't own a home. We owe on one vehicle and were given another. Most of our things are in storage in another state. Now we might be looking at another job change. We can not afford health care.

Does that worry me? Absolutely. I'd give anything in the world to make sure my children and my husband are completely covered but the fact of the matter is I can't afford $700+ a month for coverage. We're hardly making it as it is and owe family and creditors a fortune.

I was born and raised in America. As was my family and their families before them. Why do I not have a right to affordable heath care? I understand physicians went to school so they could make hundreds of thousands a year. Insurance companies pay the drs less money, taking a chunk from us too. Then they raise premiums and we get less coverage. My husband needs SERIOUS dental care. My oldest son needs SERIOUS vision care and the youngest and I are, knock on wood, doing ok so far. It is ok for the government to sit in their leather chairs and say medical care is NOT a top priority because they have it and can afford it. For those of us that work, are drug free and love our families...is it not just as important?

We all have images we want to save forever. Some your grandparents have passed down in form of negatives. Do you have a scanner that scans negatives? No, not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Although, TMNT are cool and I hear there are talks of another movie now that they are celebrating 25 years (Good LORD I feel old saying that). No, the turtles I'm talking about are Sea Turtles.

Places like Tybee Island are wonderful for sea turtles to lay their eggs. There are turtle crossing signs warning drivers of GIANT and tiny turtles crossing the roads. Lights out by 9pm on the beach. There is also the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. TIMSC gives tours and does a lot of wonderful things with the kids. They also clean up the roads when a turtle has been accidentally hit by a car. Which sadly, happens quite a lot.

There are lots of ways to save these Sea Turtles.

Loggerhead sea turtles are on the threatened species list at both the state and federal levels. The little guy in the pic above was saved from being squished by our cousin and returned to the ocean to and survive. Hey, you have to start somewhere. If you are vacationing or live on the beach, it's important not to interfere with the egg laying or the eggs. No flash photography or flashlights. Let's try to save as many of these little guys as we can and keep them off of the endangered species list.

Scientists from the University of East Anglia are studying the potential health benefits of dark chocolate, and need 40 female volunteers who would like to eat chocolate every day for a year. The chocolate loving 40 must be post-menopausal and have type 2 diabetes so it can be determined if the flavonoid compounds in chocolate can reduce the risk of heart disease. Dr Peter Curtis, of the UEA's School of Medicine, said, "Our first volunteers are about to return for their final visit to see if the markers of heart health - such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels — have changed. A successful outcome could be the first step in developing new ways to improve the lives of people at increased risk of heart disease."

Time for County Fairs

Yes, it has begun. July through October or so is when summer is winding down, you're thinking about school supplies, going back to work, fall colors and ferris wheels, cotton candy and face painting. I love a good county fair. The sights, the smells, the fireworks. I'm a sucker for a good firework show. But you turn on the news and... "oh crap our fair was last week?" How did you miss it? Where did the time go? Where is the next one in another county?

Right here you can see every county in every state, when they are having their fairs, where they have them and website information if they have it! County Fairgrounds USA has all the info you will need! These folks have a tough job keeping up with what fair goes where, starts when, link checks, etc AND they have facebook, twitter and myspace among other things. They also have several other things, web design or even see which fairs need workers! These folks have done a fantastic job.

Now for the deal part! (oooo this is my favorite) When you check out individual websites for your local fairs you can see which nights have 1/2 price on their rides, which night can you get an armband, what about lotto nights when you can bring in any expired lottery ticket and only have to pay $1 to get in?

Want to save on parking? Ask a neighbor or another family (related to you or just from work or church) when they are going! Carpool! Have a plan on how long you'll be there and where you will meet up to leave. Be sure you have each others cell phone numbers or run out to walmart and pick up some walkie talkies! Midland has one that has a 22 mile range for $34 and change ... while Motorola has another for $39 and change that ranges 14 miles. Be sure you know what channel you'll all be on and pick up batteries.

Eat before you go. WHAT? WHAT THE HECK DID I JUST WRITE??? Yes! Eat at home. Save about $50 by eating at home. Seriously. Save room for that carnie-dog you want from the fair or the cheese fries you simply must have but be sure you eat the majority of your food at home before you go. Drinks? Take a bottled water. You'll need it after all the walking. If you all take at least one you'll save a small fortune. They charge between $1-$3 per drink at the fairs. If you at home and bring your own drink you will save enough money to buy more tickets.

Find out what night has what you want to see. Be it the kids fashion show, car show or the down and dirty tractor pull. You might want to plan your trip around the concerts they show too.

1) Check out your local Pawn Shops! No, they're not all like a more formal location for Sanford and Son. Although, some are. Grin an bare it for the deals you'll get! The one we had in my home town had used movies 10 movies for $25! They had roughly 500 movies to choose from and none were the same. They also had games for every console as well as some consoles themselves! First things first, scan the local pawn shops!

2) Walmart is always dropping the prices on games! You can find some in their Under $20 bins (usually by Under $20 they just mean $19.98 so don't expect something fabulous). Often you find a really good game like Lego StarWars dropped down to $20. Other times it's games that just weren't worthy of a higher price BUT it's still a deal, you may get a little enjoyment out of it AND it's under $20. (Better still, you can check any local stores and Sunday sale papers for game deals! Best Buy, Target, etc will have great deals weekly. Believe it or not sometimes Walgreens and CVS have game deals, who knew?)

3) If you aren't in the mood to go window shopping, hit the net. Amazon, Ebay, Walmart, Target etc.

Being that my lil family of 4 are moving from small town TN to big town PA I wanted to give a local shout out to a wonderful company. Fragrant Mushroom sell THE best smelling candles in a really wide range of fragrances and sizes. The prices are fantastic as well. The folks that run the place, Thor and Cherri, are super nice people to deal with. Thor makes all the pottery by hand, they come up with new designs, colors and fragrances for candles and they are soon opening a Gallery for local artists.

Personally I love their candles the most. I have bought so many candles from so many places in several states and NONE compare to Fragrant Mushroom. The votive candles burn longer than any others I have ever bought. The fragrances vary but are all fantastic. They don't just smell great in the shop but when you take them home too. So many times I've gone to chain stores and gotten candles only to take them home, burn them and not smell a thing until I blow them out. Not these! I bought some and put them in a small paper bag once when moving to Georgia. I found them two years later. (As most everyone knows I'm the queen of storage units.) They still smelled fantastic in the bag AND while burning them!

Today, the Consumer Product Safety Commission released its annual report, Nursery Product-Related Injuries and Deaths Among Children under Age Five. The news is not encouraging. In 2006, the latest year for which data was analyzed, children under age five suffered an estimated 66,400 injuries associated with nursery products that were severe enough to require hospital treatment. And during the three-year period from 2002 to 2004, again the most recent data available, there was an average of 80 deaths per year associated with nursery products among children under five. Compare that to last year’s report, which showed 59,800 injuries in 2005, and an average of 61 deaths per year during the period of 2001 to 2003.

Why are these numbers still so high? What is more important than our baby's safety? "Well I could have saved little Timmy had I known there was a recall on my crib or that the screws were loose. I never had the time to check. I didn't know where to look." Save the excuses. You won't need them. Little Timmy will be just fine if you follow a few simple things.

1..Take the time to check the crib and play things for any loose or missing screws every couple of months. YES 2 MONTHS! These things can come lose from wear and tear, being put together improperly or malfunction on the behalf of the makers. ALWAYS check http://www.cpsc.gov/. That is the Official US Consumer Product Safety Commission page! You can do a SEARCH for any item you have to see if it has been recalled! ANYTHING!

2..Don't buy from a yard sale. Yes they are cheap but is it worth saving a few pennies and losing your baby or causing serious injury? No, of course not.

3..Remove ALL bumper pads, pillows and soft cuddly toys from the crib. Also do not use baby sheets (other than a tight fitted sheet) or comforter. "But if Walmart and Target still sell them they can't be dangerous." Oh yes they can. Once the baby is old enough to roll over he/she can suffocate on any soft item placed in the crib. The sheet could get tangled and wrapped around your baby's neck in the night. Which will bring us to #4. If you love that cutsie comforter, use it as Wall Decor. Love the bumper pads? Find a way to use it to cushion a rocking chair.

4..Put the baby on their back. I know it seems to change every few years but putting your baby on her/his back may save their little lives from SIDS. It's easy enough, BACK to SLEEP. Pampers even puts it ON their Newborn Diapers. (Or did in 2005) Our new sponsor has lots of wonderful things to help here :

5..Always be sure to keep the crib away from curtains and mini blinds. Both are a choking hazards. Make sure your crib has slats that are sturdy and close together so that baby doesn't get their head stuck.

6..Do NOT leave your baby even for a half of a second on a changing table. "Oh I'll just reach...reach....reeeeaaach... THUMP. WAAAAAAAAA" Yep baby fell because that split second was all it took for them to perform their very first rolling maneuver at the very worst time. If it has a strap, still stay less than 3 feet away and only use it as long as you are changing the baby. Do NOT just leave them on there.

--Paint chips coming off of toys
--Any toys used in your baby's bath water need to be dried after each use. Check them every couple of months for mildew, black spots, drying or cracking and throw them away

We all have these ideas that we think will make millions. Sometimes we think more about them and realize the concept will never work, find a flaw or worse we tell our friend and they make the money we could have. Sure you could sue them but all in all it's THEIR name on the product, not yours. Fail. DO NOT go through this!

These days moms are coming up with more and more wonderful ideas that we wish we hadn't gone without for so long. I subscribe to Mom Inventors and they have wonderful ideas and articles to help you figure out what you want to invent and how to make it happen. For example, have you ever tried to find a spot in your house for a bulky stroller? You know, those that come with the combo carseat that are the Cadillac of Strollers. They're HUGE! You can put them against a wall but eventually your toes will find it. You can put them in the closet but just when you are digging around in there... toes ... ouch. Then you curse the stroller. Not anymore. Mary Ann Malone came up with a wonderful idea and put it into production! Her company, MetroTots, now produces the Stroll Away!

We all think we don't have time to learn about patents. We think, "I don't have any good ideas" or "how would I ever get backing? How can "I" make my ideas real and marketable?" You have to read! Like read this, like now. ;) There are articles all over Google about How to Patent your Product or Idea, like that one. Once all is said and done, you want a patent (or want to learn more), this page is a MUST. Literally. The United States Patent and Trademark Office is your last stop. Without a patent or trademark, anyone can take your idea and claim it as their own.
